We understand that honoring the memory of a loved one is incredibly important. Donating a vehicle in their name can be a meaningful way to celebrate their life and the things they cherished. By donating a car, you not only pay tribute to their memory, but you also help support the mission of Wheel of Hope in Providence.
To make a donation, the vehicle needs to be titled in your name, and you’ll receive a tax receipt for your contribution. We can recognize your loved one in our charity records and send a tribute card to their family, letting them know of your generous act in their memory.
How to make it happen
Check Vehicle Title
Ensure the vehicle is titled in your name. Donations cannot be processed if the title is still in the name of the deceased. If necessary, consult an attorney about transferring the title.
Fill Out Donation Form
Complete our online donation form, indicating that this donation is in memory of your loved one. Provide their name for our records and to notify the family.
Schedule Pickup
Once your form is submitted, we will contact you to arrange a convenient pickup time for the vehicle. Be sure to have all documents ready.
Receive Tax Receipt
After the vehicle is picked up, you’ll receive an IRS tax receipt based on the vehicle’s value, ensuring you have documentation for your taxes.
Notify Family (Optional)
We will send a tribute card to the family, informing them of your donation in memory of their loved one, as specified in your donation form.
Common gotchas
Title Issues
Tip: If the vehicle title is still in the deceased's name, you may face delays. Consult the executor of the estate for title transfer options before proceeding.
Tax Receipt Thresholds
Tip: Be aware of the IRS thresholds. If the car sells for under $500, you might not receive a receipt. Ensure your donation meets the requirements for a tax deduction.
Family Notification
Tip: If you want the family notified, provide accurate details on the donation form. An omission can cause delays in sending the tribute card.
If this path doesn't fit
If donating your vehicle isn’t feasible due to title issues or other concerns, consider a cash donation in memory of your loved one. You can also contribute to a specific program that mattered to them or explore other charitable options that reflect their values.
